ORISA® purifier deployed in Chad to provide clean water

To help populations affected by armed conflict, an NGO has chosen to deploy nearly 180 ORISA® water purifiers in Chad. Around 1,000 people in villages and small communities on the isolated islands of Lake Chad have benefited from an ORISA® water filter and training to produce healthy water on their own. Requiring little effort, ORISA® water filters are easy to use, requiring only manual pumping.

Looking for a self-contained, easy-to-use device, ORISA® seemed the best ally for this project, which was carried out in Nahar on the island of Lake Chad south of Bol. These ORISA® water purifiers enabled beneficiaries to reduce the spread of water-borne diseases such as cholera, which are rampant in the region.

ORISA®, a reliable and sustainable solution for healthy water in Chad

In this tense context, ORISA® purifiers provide water free from bacteriological or viral contamination. This makes them a very useful and rapid solution for populations that do not benefit from community services such as water networks or improved water points. These may be isolated rural populations, or peri-urban populations supplied from untreated and contaminated communal water sources (surface wells, cisterns, etc.). Combined with beneficiary training and monitoring activities, ORISA® is a sustainable solution for water treatment. What’s more, thanks to its manual, energy-free system, the use of ORISA® generates no additional costs.

The estimated annual cost, including initial investment and maintenance costs, is US$16 per household. This is well below the cost of gallons or bottles of water, which are widely used in many countries (Asia, Middle East, West Africa, etc.). The ORISA® purifier deployed in Chad therefore offers higher-quality treatment with great economic efficiency.

ORISA® water filtration has a positive impact on beneficiaries’ health

Cholera is a waterborne disease that continues to affect large numbers of people. Despite medical advances, there are still people suffering from chronic vomiting and diarrhea, symptoms of this bacterial disease caused by Vibrio cholerae. They are accompanied by muscle cramps, smooth skin, a drop in blood pressure, and so on. And unfortunately, for many of them, death occurs within a few days in half the cases. This is all the more true for children and the elderly if they do not have access to medical care or rapid health assistance.

As part of the project run by the NGO behind this humanitarian action, ORISA® water purifiers are being distributed and made available to improve the living conditions of this population. The deployment of ORISA® water purifiers has helped to improve the sanitary situation of many households by providing them with long-term access to clean water. As the water is free from microbiological, bacteriological and viral contamination, the rate of water-borne diseases has been considerably reduced.

In 2023, the same NGO decided to deploy new ORISA® water purifiers as part of an emergency response for families fleeing Sudan and relocated to Chad. A total of 680 water filters will be made available to 3,400 beneficiaries, who will then be self-sufficient and have access to healthy water anywhere, thanks to the mobility of ORISA®.
